Talc & Cancer
The Hidden Truth
Johnson & Johnson, Colgate Palmolive Co., and other talcum powder manufacturers have recently come under legal scrutiny after several recent jury verdicts awarding damages to the families of individuals who developed cancer after years of using their products. The products include:
- Baby Powder (Johnson & Johnson);
- Shower to Shower (Johnson & Johnson);
- Cashmere Bouquet (Colgate-Palmolive Co.); and
- Other talcum based powders.
Talc and Ovarian Cancer
For decades, Johnson & Johnson was known as the safe brand that all women used. Their talcum powder products flew off the shelves. However, there is evidence that the company knew as early as 1970 that their talc products could cause ovarian cancer. Some of the companies that sold talc to Johnson & Johnson warned that talc could cause Ovarian Cancer; however, Johnson & Johnson removed the warnings and chose not to inform the public - placing profits ahead of the health of women across the country.
Scientists and researchers studied the correlation between Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer for decades and have long observed that women who use Talcum powder near or on their genital region have an increased chance of developing ovarian cancer. A recent report published in The International Journal of Gynecological Cancer in May 2015 found that talc use increases the risk of ovarian cancer by 30 to 60 percent. Another study by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute confirmed these findings. To further prove these results, scientists have actually discovered talc minerals inside the cancerous tumors removed from victim’s bodies.
To date, approximately 1,500 lawsuits have been filed on behalf of women who were also diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for feminine hygiene.
Talc and Mesothelioma
In addition to the risk of ovarian cancer, it has long been known that talc, which is mined from the earth, can often be contaminated with asbestos, another naturally occurring mineral. The relationship between even limited exposure to asbestos and development of a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma has been well documented for years. However, it has recently been discovered that some manufacturers of talc products sold products that were contaminated with asbestos.
