Every railroader who worked between 1950 and 1980 has worked around a lot of dust. What is less known is that some of that dust contained asbestos dust fibers that can cause various forms of cancer and lung problems. Asbestos products were used throughout the railroad industry – asbestos pipe insulation, asbestos brake shoes and asbestos insulation on boilers are just some of the products the railroads used that contained deadly asbestos. Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, stomach cancer and asbestosis. Railroaders may qualify for substantial compensation if they worked prior to 1980 and were exposed to asbestos dust. Over $30 billion has been set aside in trust funds to pay for asbestos-related injuries, but time to file is limited.
