For much of the twentieth century, railroads relied on materials that could withstand heat, friction and fire. Asbestos served those purposes well, so it was incorporated into insulation, gaskets, brake components, boilers, pipe coverings and other products found in locomotives, railcars and repair facilities. The danger was not always visible. When asbestos-containing materials were cut, removed, repaired or allowed to deteriorate, microscopic fibers could become airborne and be inhaled.

Decades later, some former railroad employees are being diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer or asbestosis. A diagnosis may seem disconnected from work performed 30, 40 or even 50 years earlier, but asbestos-related diseases often have long latency periods. Understanding a worker’s complete railroad employment history can therefore be an important part of identifying possible exposure.

Why asbestos was used by the railroad industry

Rail equipment generates tremendous heat and friction. Historically, manufacturers used asbestos because it resisted heat, insulated machinery and helped reduce fire risks. Asbestos-containing products could be found around steam pipes, boilers, engines, turbines, electrical systems, brake assemblies and maintenance equipment.

The presence of asbestos did not automatically mean fibers were released. The greatest danger generally arose when a product was disturbed or damaged. Removing insulation, replacing a gasket, grinding a brake component or sweeping dusty work areas could release fibers into the breathing zone. Workers nearby could also be exposed even if they did not personally handle the material.

The National Cancer Institute states that people who work with asbestos or who work around products containing it face the greatest risk of exposure. Railroad jobs that may have involved exposure

Exposure depended on the era, location, equipment, job duties and products used. Job title alone does not prove exposure, but several railroad occupations may deserve close review.

Locomotive machinists and shop workers

Machinists, mechanics and roundhouse employees often repaired or rebuilt engines and related equipment. Their work could involve removing insulation, replacing gaskets, servicing pumps and valves, or working beside others performing dusty repairs. Enclosed shops could allow fibers to circulate beyond the immediate work area.

Pipefitters, boilermakers and steam-locomotive workers

Steam systems required extensive heat insulation. Employees who installed, removed or repaired pipe covering, boiler insulation, cement and gaskets may have worked directly with asbestos-containing materials. Even after steam locomotives were phased out, older shops and equipment could continue to contain legacy asbestos.

Carmen and railcar repair employees

Carmen inspected, maintained and repaired freight and passenger cars. Depending on the equipment and time period, their work could bring them into contact with insulated components, heating systems, flooring, paneling, gaskets or other asbestos-containing products.

Electricians

Railroad electricians worked around wiring, electrical panels, generators, motors and heat-resistant components. Some electrical insulation and arc-resistant products historically contained asbestos. Electricians could also be exposed by nearby mechanical or insulation work.

Brake and clutch workers

Asbestos was historically used in friction products because of its heat resistance. Removing worn brake components, using compressed air, grinding parts or cleaning accumulated dust could create an exposure risk. The precise products and practices must be investigated rather than assumed.

Engineers, conductors, brakemen and other operating employees

Operating crews may not have repaired asbestos-containing products, but some spent long hours inside locomotives or around equipment while maintenance was performed. Dust from deteriorating insulation or earlier repair activity may also have remained in workspaces. An investigation should consider where the employee worked, how often equipment was serviced and whether dusty materials were present.

Track, building and maintenance-of-way workers

Railroad property included far more than trains. Stations, offices, depots, powerhouses and repair buildings sometimes contained asbestos insulation, roofing, flooring, fireproofing and construction products. Employees who renovated or demolished older structures could have disturbed these materials.

Secondary exposure may have affected family members

Asbestos fibers could travel home on work clothes, boots, skin or hair. A spouse or family member who shook out or laundered dusty clothing might have been exposed without ever entering a railroad facility. The National Cancer Institute notes evidence of increased mesothelioma risk among family members of heavily exposed workers and explains that fibers brought home on clothing and other surfaces are a suspected pathway.

If a spouse or household member develops mesothelioma, the railroad worker’s employment history may still be relevant. The family should tell the legal team who handled the work clothes, where they were cleaned and whether visible dust was common.

Why diagnosis can occur decades after railroad work

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer affecting the lining of the chest or abdomen. It may not become apparent until decades after exposure. This delay can make it difficult for a patient to remember specific products, contractors or work locations.

That difficulty does not necessarily end an investigation. Employment files, union records, Social Security work histories, coworker testimony, railroad documents, product records and medical evidence may help reconstruct the exposure history. What to do after an asbestos-related diagnosis

First, focus on appropriate medical care and follow the advice of qualified healthcare providers. Next, preserve information that may later be difficult to obtain. Write down every railroad employer, job title, shop, yard, route and approximate year of employment. Include the names of coworkers and supervisors when possible. Note the equipment repaired and any brands or materials remembered.

Do not throw away old employment records, union cards, photographs, pay stubs or military records. A lawyer may use these materials to identify exposure sources and responsible entities.

Timing also matters. Legal deadlines vary by claim, jurisdiction and circumstances. Waiting can make records and witnesses harder to locate. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to remember the name of every asbestos product?

No. Product identification can be helpful, but many former workers do not remember brand names decades later. Job duties, locations, dates, coworkers and equipment can provide starting points for a broader investigation.

Can a retired railroad worker still bring a claim?
