Documents obtained by Sammons & Berry, P.C., from various railroads show that railroad cabooses were often equipped with composition asbestos brake shoes, asbestos heat shields behind the stoves, asbestos spark shields, and some even had the entire crew compartment covered with asbestos wall covering. Air testing has also shown that asbestos-containing dust from the brake shoes on other freight cars could also contaminate the caboose as well.
